Patient Participation Directed Enhanced Service (DES)
With the introduction of the new Patient Participation Directed Enhanced Service (DES), we can support you to meet some of its requirements.
Step 3 of the DES asks practices to collate patient views through the use of a local survey and to produce valid outcomes. The Improving Practice Questionnaire (IPQ) has been widely used and validated so practices can be confident that results achieved are meaningful and valid.
The IPQ was designed for patients to consider the whole ‘journey’ through the practice. This means they take account of all areas rather than just prescribed specific topics. Areas covered by the IPQ included;
- Opening hours
- Telephone contact
- Advanced booking satisfaction
- Seeing a doctor within 48 hours
- Seeing doctor of choice
- Environment of the practice
- Waiting times
- Interpersonal skills of clinicians
- Reception staff
- Other services provided by the practice e.g. reminder systems
In addition there are two comments boxes at the end of the questionnaire. Having considered all aspects of the practice patients can then expand in more detail on any aspect on which they would like to pass comment. In our experience, if there is a specific problem within the practice that is detrimental to patients’ visits then this will become clearly apparent.
Further benefits of using the IPQ are that it has been declared by the RCGP as ‘fit for purpose’ for Revalidation (done in conjunction with our validated colleague questionnaire) AND it may help provide evidence for CQC – all in just one survey.
On completion of the survey every practice using the IPQ will receive;
- A clear comprehensive easy-to-assimilate report
- A template to facilitate discussion of the survey information with your patient reference group
- A template action plan to outline any proposed changes
- A poster illustrating the IPQ results to display in practice to inform patients
