About CFEP Surveys

We are the experts in healthcare surveys. We pioneered the use of patient-based feedback instruments and are deeply embedded in the United Kingdom (UK) healthcare sector.

Supporting healthcare professionals to obtain statistically valid evidence on the quality of their patient care and services to enable quality improvement is our reason for being.

When establishing CFEP in 1996, Emeritus Professor Arthur Brownlea AM, Associate Professor Michael Greco and Julie McGovern had a clear vision: to improve patient care by strengthening communication and the connections between clinicians and their patients. 

Michael was invited to the UK in 1999 by the then President of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) – Dame Professor Lesley Southgate – to provide expertise on patient engagement in healthcare; a key focus of the planned modernisation of the NHS.

We apply insight and experience in both developing fit-for-purpose survey products and analysing survey results to enable health professionals to deliver improved outcomes. We are delighted to see the positive ripple effect this has in our communities.

Our work has been foundational to the development of robust patient and colleague feedback mechanisms as a platform for improving patient care in the UK and beyond.

CFEP Surveys have completed almost 5.5 million questionnaires and have supported more than 11,000 organisations and 38,000 practitioners to obtain statistically valid evidence on the quality of their patient care and services. 

Our Product Portfolio

We provide robust, highly validated and widely published surveys based on the academic excellence of our founder Associate Professor Michael Greco in collaboration with a number of academic centres including the University of Exeter (UK), Auckland University of Technology (NZ) and Griffith University (Australia). This same rigour and attention to detail is ingrained in all our processes.

For appraisal and revalidation, we have helped tens of thousands of doctors and nurses with patient and colleague feedback using both our CFEP360 Patient and Colleague Survey and the GMC MSF tools. 

We are especially proud of our Improving Practice Survey and the fact that more than half of all general practices in Britain have used CFEP for patient feedback. 

The CFEP Care in Out of Hours Survey is patient experience survey for treatment centres, telephone advice and clinical navigation hubs and home visits services, and highlights our ongoing responsiveness to sector needs.

We also administer standard surveys, such as the Community Pharmacy Patient Questionnaire and the Friends and Family Test.

Our experienced survey development team can design and implement a survey solution to meet your exact requirements. Some of our past work includes bespoke solutions for feedback on patient transport, employee feedback and customer satisfaction surveys.

Strong connections between our founder Associate Professor Michael Greco and Exeter University underpins our early research and development work.

We have an extensive partnership history with the General Medical Council (GMC), the National Health Service (NHS) and the Department of Health and Social Care (DOHSC) Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF) to design and deliver healthcare feedback solutions.

We also have a strong business relationship with two leading accreditation agencies in Australia, Australian General Practice Accreditation Limited (AGPAL) and Quality Innovation Performance Limited (QIP), and regularly collaborate on quality improvement projects for the benefit of the healthcare sector.

    CFEP is established with the express intention of supporting clinicians to communicate and connect with patients by helping them obtain accurate evidence on the quality of their patient care.

  • 1999

    CFEP Founder, Michael Greco is invited to the UK by the President of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) to provide expertise on patient feedback as part of the National Health Service (NHS) modernisation.

  • 2002

    CFEP launches the industry benchmark interpersonal skills questionnaire, a fully validated patient feedback tool designed specifically for health professionals.

  • 2004

    CFEP is one of two organisations to be approved to provide annual patient surveys for general practices across the UK as part of the Quality Outcomes Framework.

  • 2005

    CFEP begins working with the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust to provide the CFEP360 Patient and Colleague Surveys service for all Trust staff requiring revalidation.

  • 2006

    CFEP is responsible for managing the largest ever surveys of general practice in the UK at that time on patient satisfaction asking more than 800,000 NHS patients annually to rate their GP practice experience.

  • 2006

    CFEP is chosen as the research partner with the GMC in a five-year project evaluating and piloting the GMC questionnaires and the CFEP360 survey is used as the source of validation (Phase I).

  • 2007

    CFEP begins working with the Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust to provide the CFEP360 Patient and Colleague Surveys service for all Trust staff requiring revalidation.

  • 2008

    CFEP is chosen as survey partner to Peninsula Medical School (PMS) to establish processes and benchmarks for use with the GMC patient and colleague questionnaires for Revalidation. (Phase II).

    CFEP develops the Care in Out of Hours Survey patient experience survey for treatment centres, telephone advice and clinical navigation hubs and home visits services.

  • 2010

    CFEP is the first UK organisation to be approved by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) for our CFEP360 MSF survey tool.

  • 2012

    CFEP begins working with South Tees Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to undertake our CFEP360 multisource feedback surveys for all Trust employees requiring revalidation.

  • 2014

    CFEP is appointed by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine (FOM) to develop and administer the new CFEP FOM Colleague Survey for Revalidation.

  • 2014

    CFEP begins working with the Royal Cornwall NHS Trust to undertake GMC multisource feedback surveys for all Trust employees requiring revalidation.

  • 2015

    CFEP begins working with Fittleworth Dispensing Alliance Company to manage their annual customer feedback survey.

  • 2017

    CFEP worked in partnership with the Primary Care Foundation to build and run an Avoidable Appointments survey which was very widely used across the Primary Care market.

  • 2018

    A systematic review of primary care patient feedback tools by University of East Anglia accredits CFEP's ISQ as the tool it examined to have substantial data on its psychometric properties.

  • 2019

    CFEP works with in partnership with Fittleworth Dispensing Alliance Company marketing department to develop and manage a new customer feedback survey.

  • 2020

    CFEP undertakes strategic market development analysis to ensure continuing alignment with the UK healthcare sector and their needs.
